New fonts on this site
Published on Last updated on
Since the beginning of this website, it has used the default fonts from your browser, as explained in the colophon:
An important and deliberate change is that this site uses the default fonts from your browser. If the font is not beautiful, you need to change the default fonts of your browser. You will certainly find how to do this by using your favourite search engine. This choice is based on my own preferences. I am, however, not alone in this, as illustrated by the article In defense of user-defined web fonts from Theodore Keloglou.
While I still support user-defined fonts, the reality makes things difficult. Very few people modify the default fonts in their browser, which means that this site looks downright bad for most people (concerning the typography).
For this reason, this site will now load fonts. Those that absolutely want to use their own font will no doubt find countless extensions for their browser that enable this feature.
I have chosen same the font family I have used in my doctoral dissertation:
- Source Serif by Frank Grießhammer as serif font
- Source Sans by Paul Hunt as sans-serif font
- Source Code by Paul Hunt as monospace font
All these fonts are published by Adobe and are designed to form one coherent font family.
The fonts are loaded as “variable” font, which means you need a modern browser to fully appreciate them.
As always with fonts, the system on which you are viewing them as a big impact, in addition to various settings on those systems. For more information, see the article font.render.
